We believe that the growth of students and their academic progress reflect the quality of any educational institution. To foster this development, we regularly organize a variety of activities such as seminars, legal workshops, debates, quizzes, arbitration sessions, parliamentary discussions, and judgment writing exercises. These initiatives not only enrich our students but also contribute positively to society as a whole. The International Law Fest ‘Nomikos Polemos’ serves as a valuable platform for aspiring legal professionals to enhance their knowledge and skills. Our aim is to ensure that every interaction with us provides an enriching experience for all participants.

History

The Government Law College Calicut was established in 1970, making it the third Government Law College in the state and it is affiliated with the University of Calicut. he origins of legal education in Kerala can be traced back to 1875, when part-time law classes were initiated in Trivandrum as a component of Maharaja’s College. This initiative aimed to prepare students for the law  examinations conducted by Madras University. In 1894, a dedicated law college was established in Trivandrum, which later became affiliated with Travancore University upon its formation in 1937.

Following the merger of Travancore and Cochin in 1949, the law college was relocated to Ernakulam. In 1954, the government established another law college in Trivandrum, which subsequently gained affiliation with the University of Kerala. Prior to this reorganization, students from the Malabar region received their legal education at Madras Law College. In Madras, law classes
had been offered at Presidency College since as early as 1855, where professors of law were present. The Madras Law College itself was founded in 1891. Additionally, in 1953, a department of legal studies was created under a Director of Legal Studies to further enhance legal education.

On November 1, 1956, the United Kerala State was established, incorporating the Travancore-Cochin State and the Malabar region. The founding of Calicut University in 1968 highlighted the need for a Law College in Malabar, which already had several Arts, Science, and Commerce colleges.

As a result, a new Government Law College commenced operations in Calicut, located in the building next to the Training College that previously housed the Government Arts and Science College. The first-year LL.B. class began during the academic year 1970-71, with the inaugural group of law graduates completing their studies in 1973.

Following this milestone, the college evolved into a fullyfledged institution, averaging around 300 enrolled students each year. In 1976, an LL.M. course was introduced initially as a part-time program but transitioned to a full-time course when the college moved to new facilities. Additionally, a five-year LL.B. course was launched during the academic year 1984-85.

The college was temporarily located in a building next to the Training College. A new college complex, which included hostels for both male and female students, was under construction at Vellimadukunnu. The main structure was completed by April 1982, and the college moved to this new facility on June 1, 1982. At that time, the college became a fully operational institution with an average enrollment of 730 students.
